Arts&Culture

The NMAC Foundation is located in the interior grounds of the Dehesa Montenmedio in the Cadiz municipality of Vejer de la Frontera.

The NMAC Foundation was created as a point of interaction between its social, cultural and territorial context. Following the current model for a relationship based centre, the NMAC Foundation project was conceived as a mediating museum, committed to supporting contemporary artists on specific projects wich promote social dialogue and understanding through art.

Adel Abdessemet „Salam Europe“

Adel Abdessemed, with his project Salam Europe, shows a terrible aspect of immigration, that of the border crossings, the lack of freedom, with a piece made out of rolls of barbed wire in which the artist, with his particular poetic subtlety, lays bare the nightmare experienced by immigrants who try to go over the barbed-wire fence separating Europe from Africa in the city of Melilla, or by the prisoners of war held in Guantanamo—local situations with global implications. The strong physical presence of the coil of barbed wire has an anti-hypnotic function, critical of the belief in false promises, and promotes, on the contrary, self-management of one’s own life through a reserve of hope and energy, which in spite of being limited, induces us to daydream. The anti-hypnotic function that Salam Europe generates is the conduit through which modern society reencounters a universal motivating force driving towards a better future.

Gunilla Bandolin „Sky Impression“

„Gunilla Bandolins project „Skys Impression“ is inspired by the confrontation between the water characteristic of the rainy, fertile month of the year and the contrasting dry, hot months. The presence of water tanks, as Montenmedios only previous architecture, acted as an inspirational element from where the different villages of Andalucia and the whole mountainous province of Cadiz can be observed“ Jimena Blazquez Abascal

Roxy Paine „Transplanted”

Roxy Paine wanted to create a new species of tree. The solemn appearance, the luminous silver colour of his work “Transplanted” ensures it stands out in its territory. Surrounded by nut pines we find ourselves before a new species which imbues a sense of sadness in us, as if it were an alien in an unknown land.

“Transplanted” is a stainless steel leafless tree, located amongst the rest of the trees in the NMAC Foundation’s pine grove, on an area of elevated land, making it visible from almost anywhere on the site. The truck was brought ready made from the factory and later the artist fused and moulded the branches “in situ”. Paine chose a promontory within the estate to locate “Transplanted”, a dry, dead tree, yet at the same time highly visible, situated above all others.
